Shopify vs Daraz: which is better for selling online in Pakistan?
Shopify or Daraz? An honest comparison of costs, traffic, branding and customer data for Pakistani sellers, and when it makes sense to use both.

Quick answer
Daraz is better when you want buyers quickly without building your own traffic: you pay a commission on each order instead of a monthly plan. Shopify is better when you want your own brand, your own customer list and control over how you sell, but you have to bring the visitors yourself. Many Pakistani sellers use both.
- Daraz charges a commission per order that depends on the product category, and no listing fee.
- Shopify charges a monthly plan in US dollars, and the store and customer list are yours.
- Daraz gives you shoppers. Shopify gives you a brand. Neither gives you both on day one.
- If you already have an Instagram or WhatsApp audience, your own Shopify store is usually worth it.
In this article
"Should I just sell on Daraz, or do I need my own Shopify store?" I hear this from business owners all the time, usually from people who have been selling on one and are wondering about the other.
The honest answer is that they're built for different jobs. Daraz is a marketplace: a busy bazaar where shoppers already are. Shopify is your own shop on your own street: nobody walks past by accident, but everything inside is yours. Here's how to decide.
Shopify vs Daraz at a glance
| Daraz | Shopify | |
|---|---|---|
| How you pay | A commission on each order, depending on the category, and no listing fee | A monthly plan in US dollars, plus any apps you choose |
| Where buyers come from | Daraz's own shoppers | Your own marketing: Instagram, WhatsApp, Google, ads |
| Your brand | Your shop lives inside Daraz's design | The whole store is designed around your brand |
| Customer data | Limited. The customer belongs to the marketplace | Every customer, email and order is yours |
| Pricing pressure | High. Similar products sit side by side | Lower. Shoppers see only your products |
| Payments | Handled by Daraz | Cash on delivery built in, plus gateways you add |
| Best for | Testing products, quick sales, sellers without an audience | Brands, repeat customers, sellers with a following |
Daraz's fee details come from its Sell on Daraz page, and Shopify's from its pricing page. Commission rates and plan prices change, so check both before you budget.
When Daraz is the better choice
- You don't have an audience yet. Daraz brings shoppers who are already looking for products like yours.
- You're testing a product. It's a low-commitment way to see what sells before investing in a brand.
- Your products are commodities. If shoppers compare mostly on price, a marketplace is where they compare.
- You'd rather not handle a website. You list products and fulfil orders, and Daraz runs the platform.
The trade-off is control. You compete next to similar listings, your shop looks like every other shop, and building a relationship with the customer is hard when the marketplace sits in between.
When your own Shopify store is the better choice
- You're building a brand. Your photography, colours, story and packaging can show up everywhere.
- You already have followers. If people find you on Instagram or WhatsApp, a store turns that attention into orders without endless DMs.
- You want repeat customers. Their details stay with you, so you can bring them back with new collections.
- Your products need explaining. Custom orders, size guides, care instructions and gifting options fit much better on your own site.
The trade-off is traffic. A new store gets no visitors on its own. You need a reason for people to come, whether that's social media, ads, word of mouth or search.
The real cost comparison
People often compare "Daraz commission" with "Shopify subscription" and stop there. The fuller picture:
- Daraz costs you a share of every order, and indirectly a share of your margin through price competition.
- Shopify costs you a fixed monthly plan, the setup of your store, and the cost of bringing visitors, usually your time on social media or money on ads.
At low volume, Daraz often costs less because you pay only when you sell. As your brand and repeat orders grow, a fixed monthly plan on your own store can become the cheaper option per order. I break down every Shopify cost in my guide to Shopify store cost in Pakistan.
Why many sellers use both
You don't have to choose forever. A common setup is:
- Daraz for discovery. New customers find you there.
- Your Shopify store for your brand. Your full range, bundles, new launches and custom orders live there.
- Your social media points to your store. Instagram, WhatsApp and search bring your own audience to the store you own.
Read Daraz's seller policies before mixing the two, especially anything about contacting marketplace customers outside Daraz.
Payments on your own store
The question that worries Daraz sellers most about Shopify is payments, because Daraz handles them for you. On Shopify in Pakistan, cash on delivery is built in as a manual payment method, and card gateways come from third-party apps. My guide to Shopify payment gateways in Pakistan walks through each option and how to set up cash on delivery properly.
A simple way to decide
Ask yourself three questions:
- Do people already come to me? If yes, your own store will turn them into orders. If not, start on Daraz.
- Do I want customers to remember my brand, or just buy the product? Brand points to Shopify, product points to Daraz.
- Can I spend time each week bringing visitors? If not yet, Daraz carries that load for you.

Frequently asked questions
Is Shopify better than Daraz?
Neither is better for everyone. Daraz suits sellers who want marketplace traffic without building a brand, and Shopify suits sellers who want their own store, customer list and pricing control and can bring their own visitors.
Can I sell on Shopify and Daraz at the same time?
Yes. Many sellers use Daraz to reach new buyers and their own Shopify store for brand customers, repeat orders and products they don't want to discount.
Does Daraz charge a listing fee?
Daraz's seller page says there is no listing fee. It deducts a commission from each order, and the rate depends on the product's category. Sellers can see the current rates in the Seller Center.
Do I need my own website if I already sell on Instagram?
It isn't required, but a Shopify store gives Instagram followers a proper place to browse, pay by cash on delivery and order again without messaging you for every detail.
